Friday

We had raised the funds to bring Nevada, Patriot's Magic, Eva, Besie, along with Otto and Bugies from previous rescues to NER. Patriot's Magic and Otto arrived with stangles and they all needed to be moved to the back of our ranch so that our other horses do not come in contact with the sick horses.
Tawnee had to treach Nevada how to lead in a short matter of time and Patriot's Magic followed his mommy to one of our back pens. They all got settled in before night fall. It is good to have them safely here.
Nevada and Patriot's Magic will be going to Pregnant Mare Rescue as soon as they are well.
Hardy's adopter drove up to adopt him, another baby has found a loving home. It is so wonderful to be able to match previously condemned to death horses with such loving people.

The Feedlot Horses

The feedlot horses in our transistional pasture have all contracted strangels somehow. This is very sad news as we have had strangles sweep through our herd before, and while it is not a deadly disease, it is very nasty and contagious. Hopefully they all recover very quickly and can find the right homes!
The current feedlot rescue is going good, we have until the end of Sunday to raise the funds and save them, it's going to take $6,500 to save them. We are currently at $1900. No one left behind!
Xella, one of the horses that we rescued from the feedlot, was adopted and transported to her new home today. Xella's adopters will keep an eye on her and keep her in quarantine so she doesn't infect anyone else, and they will provide whatever treatment is needed for her. We unfortunately arrived after dark, and so it was quie challenging getting her backed up close enough to her new home so she wouldn't run away. You see, Xella hasn't yet learned how to halter or lead, so we had to make a human fence so she would go from where we could park the trailer to her new home. Fortunately this was all inside a larger fenced yard, so there was no danger of her getting out on a major road.

Adoptions and more...

Today was as busy as normal. Tawnee worked on the computer, reformatting the "Saved" page on the feedlot horses web site and posting the new rescue of 12 slaughter bound horses.
Jason continues to work on the fence, someday it will get done. He pounded lots of posts into the ground and will be very happy when he can work on other projects.
Napa's adopter came today to meet him and take him home. She fell in love with him, really they were a cute match, even their hair matched.
Tawnee showed horses to two other potential adopters, as a result Chocolate, Briggs and Mac are now in adoption pending. Chocolate and Briggs will be going to the same home, which will be really great as they have become friends and Briggs needs to be with a friend.
Claire got more adoption forms approved today and now one of the pre-approved adopters has put a hold on Yuma.
Another potential adopter put a hold on Snowman & Angus.
So 6 of our rescued babies were placed in adoption pending today, they will be leaving us soon and providing room for other rescued horses, so we can save more that are in need.

Claire and Ron have been fostering Brazy and they have come to the realization that they could not bear to let Brazy go and they have officially adopted her today as well.

Our protest sign up is going great so far, we have 42 people coming! It is wonderful to see so much support for the horses. If Roseville Livestock Auction gets away with kicking one rescue out, they will kick other rescues out if they think they can do it. If rescues cannot attend the auction then who will save the horses? We need you to sign up too! Our goal is ove 200 people, so please make it a reality for the horses!

A Great Day!

Today was a great day. Dina of Animal Planet and her mother came out to visit us and they enjoyed meeting all the horses and hearing some of the stories of the horses. Dina had alot of fun riding Peanut (one of Jason & Tawnee's rescued horses) she is a Paso Fino and it was a treat for Dina to ride one of the smoothest horses in the world.

The gate is up!

Friday was a very busy day for us. Tawnee had to go into town and get supplies for the horses, stuff for the fencing and the gate. While Tawnee was in town Jason showed some horses to a potential adopter. Tawnee got back to the ranch at 12:15 pm and was not there for more then 5 minutes and the next potential adopter to see the horse she had put an adoption hold on, Battle Cry, was here to see if they were a good match. Battle Cry was not the best match for her, so Tawnee showed her 5 other horses and Tiger was the best for her. Tiger really felt comfortable with her and she just loved him. When Jason headed up to get the gate up Tawnee got back from town. He worked hard and had to dig through very rocky soil, but now the gate is up. It will keep horses that may escape from their pens from getting onto the main road.

Happy Thanksgiving!

We, the staff of NER, wish to give you a special thanksgiving thanks for all the help, support and encouragement we have been given this year. Often we wondered where the next load of hay would come from, but we are thankful that we have been able to make the huge impact on the horse community that we have. A special thanks to Shirley for putting thousands of hours of work towards saving hundreds of horses from certain death in the slaughter house. Thanks to Rob and Dina of Animal Planet, Darlene and Mona (and the rest of the Ride Your Horse staff) for making our trip to LA and being on Animal Planet such a wonderful experience. Thanks
to Claire for the many hours of phone calls doing adoption applications and transporting. Many thanks to Deb for having the courage to hop on the new horses. Thanks to Kimmy, Annette and friends for keeping our stables clean. A Giant Thank You! to all of our donors, supporters and adopters.
Thank you President Bush for pardoning a couple turkeys this year. Please pardon all horses, and save them from slaughter, instead of just a couple turkeys. You can do it!

A day on the computer

Tawnee spent all day on the computer, working on the web site making the auction protest pages and sign up form. When she was done with the protest stuff, she started working on e-news. She sat down at the computer at 7:30 a.m. and was done at 8:30 p.m. It helps to be busy when you are filling the loss of a horse.
Xella went into adoption pending as well, it was all around a busy day.

The Protest!

We will be having a huge protest at Roseville Livestock Auction on December 9, 2007. Come join us, you can make a difference in the lives of the horses we save, they need you!

A Rough Day

Today was a very sad day, a first in our 4 years of rescuing. We took Sabre for his last trailer ride to the vet to be humanely euthanized. We have had horses pass away from old age and a stroke, but we have never had to trailer a horse to the vet to be put down. From his severe pain with every step, and the x-rays confirmed it, poor Sabre was doomed to a life filled with intense agony every minute of every day. We emailed the x-rays to our favorite bare foot trimmer, and she said "When the bone is gone, there is nothing that can be done." We will miss you Sabre, but we are so glad you did not die by the hand of a butcher.
Jason and Tawnee drove to Quincy, 90 miles one way, to retrieve Scruffy who was being fostered to be adopted once his gelding was done. It wasn't done, so we retrived him and will be having him gelded very soon. He learned to lead and we are told he was rode once or twice while he was gone. He will be up for adoption as soon as he recovers from being gelded.
This morning Jason continued working on the fenceline for a couple hours, battling the poison oak. It itches!

More Fencing and Adoption Pending

Today Jason started developing rashes from Poison Oak. So, to exact revenge, he got his chainsaw out and chopped about 700' of fence line through the brush. When a job has to be done, it has to be done. Deal with the consequences later. He fully expects to develop immunity to poison oak this summer as he did last summer.
The 3 little ponies, Snowdrift, Snowball and Snowstorm, are in adoption pending status now, a lot of people wish they were already trained to ride/drive or at least be friendly little Christmas presents, but the right person placed them in adoption pending status that is able to give them the loving training they need. Hardy, one of the Feedlot babies, was also placed in adoption pending today.

This is Snowstorm enjoing his stay at NER in the Mare Motel.

Work Day With Volunteers

Today we got a lot of work done! We had 5 strong volunteers show up about 1:30 to help Jason, who had already been slaving away since the wee hours of the morning get some major fencing done. The girls did easier, although not as fun of tasks, such as cleaning stalls and moving manuer around while the guys pounded T-posts and strung field fencing. We got about 800' of fencing mostly done, but we still have over 3000' to check, build and repair. It will be great to have a 20 acre pasture bordering our main facility.

The funds were raised to save another 12 horses from slaughter at the feedlot, now we are working on raising the funds for "the big yellow bus" to take them to safety.

Tawnee showed 3 horses to prospective adopters, but no one was lucky enough to go home. One adopter was not a good match with the horse, and the others are very interested in getting a stable lined up.

Tawnee's Back!

Tawnee is feeling better today and showed 8 horse to prospective adopters. No one was adopted, but that's how it goes sometimes. We are so glad that Tawnee is feeling better and can get back to work!

Mystro Got Adopted!

Mystro was delivered to his new owner and adopted today! His adopter had come out to NER and fallen in love with him.
Jason transported him to his new home as Tawnee stayed at NER with their son Justin and her 102 + fever. She tried to rest and answer phone calls.
Mystro loves his new owner and his new home.
Back in September Mystro was in a feedlot awaiting slaughter, but we saved him and he's happy now!

Another Day

While Jason was unloading the hay, Deb (NER trainer & a forster caregiver) came down to get some foal blankets for Jacob, Hardy & Fabio. She was also planning on going for a ride with Tawnee, but Tawnee was sick. Then last night Tawnee was working on the website, updating it etc.. and she become too sick to work on and had to have Jason take over.
Deb worked with Battle Cry and took him for his first ride at NER in the round pen, he did great!

Later in the day Jason & Tawnee (still feeling sick) took hay out to the saved feedlot horses at our 10 acre pasture Gridley. They were all very happy to see us. We brought Baba back to NER as she was looking a little thin. We got pictures of all the horses and they are all doing great. It is so nice to have the poeple at the place to care for the horses and give us updates on them.

Tawnee had a fever of 102 by the time they got home.

Hay

Jason went to get hay yesterday and got 80 bales. This spring we were able to get hay for $8.00 then in the summer $9.00 a bale and now it's up to $10.00 a bale. This load of hay cost $800! We buy our hay directly from the hay growers to save money. Let's pray that the price of hay does not keep going up.

10 More Acres Leased & 2 More Adoptions

We got the lease on the 10 acres that borders the last 10 acres we leased a few weeks ago, the one that borders are main facility. So now NER has a 30 acre facility at one location in Oroville, along with the 10 acre pasture for the feedlot horses in Gridley. That makes our total facility 40 acres now!!
Saaba & Missy Mouse were adopted together today by one of Saaba's sponsors. They will be very happy with their Arab loving owner. We plan on delivering them to their new home on Sunday.

Feedlot Rescue

There are 11 horses & 1 donkey at a Nevada feedlot that will be slaughtered if you don't do your part to help! The semi truck will be coming for them and taking them to a slaughterhouse this Friday (11-16-07) if the funds are not raised to save them. They are all bound for Mexico. Please Help Them! We Can't Do This With Out You! The total price to save their lives is $8,295.00

3 Adoptions ~ To The Vet ~ Education

Victory, Snowflake and Snow Crystal were adopted today! They were adopted by the same family who adopted Birdy and Artex, now they all get to live together.
Saber went to the vet today to have his feet checked out as he had been lame ever since we saved him from the feedlot. His hooves were in bad shape, we got his hooves trimmed but after 2 weeks he was still lame and we decided to have x-rays taken. The x-rays showed that he is severely foundered in both front hooves. They told us the kindest thing to do is to have him put to sleep. Please pray for us so we can make the right decision for Saber.
Butte College student's came out to NER as well today. By the time they got to NER it was getting dark but that did not bother them. They interviewed Tawnee & Jason and spent some time with the horses. They will be making a PowerPoint presentation and will be presenting at the college to receive credits.

Our Auction Day

Today NER Staff went to the Roseville Livestock Auction to save as many horses as we could. We have received emails and seen a post on the Alex Brown Racing Form about the Roseville Livestock Auction. Click here to read the ABR
As we drew near to the auction, we began to see the familiar scene of horse trailers with horses headed to the auction.
We got there about 10:00 am and we went out to the back where the horses are held before the auction. We picked out some horses that we wanted to rescue and went into the auction room. While quietly sitting near the top row of the auction room, NER staff Jason, Tawnee and Kimmy were shocked and surprised to suddenly be confronted by an obviously upset and distraught auctioneer. His loud tirade, which attracted the attention of the entire audience, consisted of threats, insults, foul language and demands to immediately leave the property. He said that the video that is on our website is slandering Roseville Livestock Auction. Click here to watch the video. Jason calmly and firmly asked if the auctioneer was the owner, and he denied being the owner but insisted he is “the boss.” Jason requested to be allowed to discuss the situation further with the owner of the property. After a lot of profanity, “The boss” took Jason and Tawnee to the office and left to find the real owner. An older guy, who we later learned was not the owner, came back with “the boss” and immediately, in a very angry tone yelled “We don’t need your kind here, get out now! OUT!” Tawnee asked to be able to retrieve our items that were left in the auction ring and was told, “No, out!” Politely insisting, Tawnee was finally allowed to retrieve our items. The older guy was yelling and screaming, and he grabbed a couple of the auction workers to help “escort” Jason from the property. At one point, the older man got right in Jason’s face, looked passed the 9 month old infant Jason was holding in his arms, and yelled “I’m going to punch you in the face and knock you out for a week. If you ever come back to this auction you won’t be leaving standing up.” While Tawnee and Kimmy where heading out to the truck “the boss” confronted Tawnee and threatened that he would make sure that we would be kicked out of any auctions that he works at if we try to attend.
After receiving approximately 5 minutes of verbal abuse from the staff and management of Roseville Livestock Auction, NER Staff was able to get into the truck and leave the property. What the Roseville Livestock Auction staff and management did not realize was that a person in the auction room was so appalled at the way we were treated that they slipped us their cell phone number and offered to help us in any way the person could. We called the person and asked if the person would bid on some horses for us. The person said “yes” and was able to successfully bid and save 3 horses. We transferred the horses and paid for them not a block from the Auction yard at 1401 Church Street, Roseville Ca.
We have attended this auction for years, and have purchased thousands of dollars worth of horses, and are very alarmed that the auction is taking an anti-rescue stance. They are more than willing to allow blatant horse abusers (not the auction workers, but people who repeatedly buy at the auction) to bid on horses, but attempt to prevent us from bidding. We have personally witnessed, among other things, grown men punching horses in the face repeatedly with a closed fist, repeatedly slamming a trailer door on a horses back legs while they are still on the ground, attempting to drag wild horses into 2 horse straight loads with lots of ropes, blood pouring from smashed noses, etc. Click Here to read one of our auction stories 6-11-06, this all happened at the Roseville Livestock Auction. We are concerned that Roseville Livestock Auction is unwilling to allow us, who treats our animals with care and respect, the ability to rescue horses from an unknown fate. During the time we were being yelled at, Jason asked if they could guarantee that no horses are sold for slaughter there, and the man who originally confronted us snarled: “I don’t have to guarantee you anything buddy.” In the passed we have purposefully not revealed what truly happens at Roseville, but due to their actions, we will be sharing all we know with law enforcement including pictures, videos, depositions, and will be contacting the media, and inviting the help of people like you. When the Roseville Livestock Auction management apologizes and invites us back, we will be happy to begin removing the more serious cases from our website and not indicting them of allowing animal abuse on their property…
Roseville Livestock Auction also in the passed has publicly humiliated NorCal Equine Rescue by attempting to order us, after they knew we were out of funds since we were gathering our things and heading to the office to pay, to bid up the price of horses we did not have the funds to save by saying: “Norcal, you say you are a rescue, save this one!” repeatedly through the auction microphone. Sadly we didn’t have the funds, we cannot save all the horses, and so in front of a large audience they attempted to make Norcal appear uncaring, when they knew we were out of funds.
The good news is, thanks to our large support base, they will never be able to keep Norcal Equine Rescue from saving horses unless they kick every buyer out of the auction. They may have the legal right to prevent Jason and Tawnee, the founders of NorCal Equine Rescue, from personally visiting their property (we are consulting our legal counsel) but they can never keep a rescue organization from attending unless they close the buying process to only people they know. Even then, we will still find a way…
Below are the three horses saved, thanks to someone willing to risk verbal and emotional abuse to do what they knew was right.
Little Ghazi is a 12 year old TB gelding that has won over $350,000.00 in his racing days. He is a very sweet guy and is sound. His racing days are over and that's why he ended up that an auction.
Here are some links about his racing days; Click on link 1 and 2 for the stories.
This is Little Ghazi racing in 2002. He took third place in this race, his racing number was 2.

A New Arrival

NER staff (Jason & Tawnee) just got back from Sacramento after picking up Briggs, the newest horse in the rescue. His owner was not a good match with him so she donated him to NER. We will soon be looking for that perfect match for him.

13 Horses Saved and 2 Adopted

The 13 feedlot horses are now safe! We have raised the $5,895 to save their lives and now we must raise $1,500 for transporting them to the various rescue and other fees.
Birdy and Artex were adopted today. They will be very spoiled by two sweet kids. Birdy and Artex really like their new family.

3 More Little Ponies!

Today NER Staff, Tawnee Preisner and Claire Pass had a long day rescuing 3 more of the wild Ukiah ponies, 2 studs and 1 mare. It takes about 3 hours to drive over to Ukiah and even longer on the way back with ponies in the trailer. Tawnee and Claire were on the go from 6:00 am and made it back to the rescue at 7:30 pm. The mare and 1 of the studs is white and 1 is a liver chestnut, so now we have 7 white ponies at our rescue.
With this rescue it now makes 168 equines saved in this year alone thanks to our supporters!
